Matching a tube man to a blower

A tube man that flops or barely stands is nearly always on the wrong fan. Size, power and placement are all you need to get right.

Measure the opening at the bottom of the tube, not the height. A 12-inch tube on an 18-inch fan will not seal; an 18-inch tube on a 12-inch fan will not stand.

Power and cords

Both blowers run on 110V/60Hz. The 12-inch fan draws about 5.5 A, the 18-inch about 11 A. Use a short, heavy-gauge outdoor cord and avoid sharing the circuit with heaters or compressors.

Where to stand him

  • On a flat board or slab, not bare grass or dirt — the intake pulls up debris.
  • Clear of awnings, wires and branches the arms could catch.
  • Against a contrasting background: white or yellow in front of brick, red or blue in front of trees.
  • Weighted or tied off on windy days so the fan does not creep.

Care between events

Bring the blower in at night and in heavy rain. Let a damp tube dry before folding it, and check the hook-and-loop band for grass and grit so it keeps sealing.
